Our Toxic Laundry Story

I can’t even remember what happened but for whatever reason, we couldn’t do our laundry at home and we needed to get it done.

So we did what any good kids we do and we each headed off to our respective parents’ houses, overflowing laundry bin in tow.

We both came home at the end of the day. I quickly made the bed and we both climbed in.

We lay there silently for about 5 minutes and then my husband says to me, “I don’t feel very good. I’ve been feeling nauseous since I started driving home and I’ve had a headache ever since.”

“I actually don’t feel well either! My stomach is feeling uneasy and my headed started hurting when I… do you think it’s the bedsheets?”

“I think it might be. Let’s take them off.”

So we unmade the bed, tossed all the cleaned bedsheets, duvet and all, down to the basement and remade everything in spare blankets.

As soon as we climbed into bed again we were instantly aware that what was causing our problems was, in fact, the newly washed bedsheets.

My husband hadn’t brought our laundry soap with him and just used what his parents had. Some conventional laundry detergent.

I used what we normally use, and what my parents’ use – Thieves Laundry Soap.

My husband’s response after that night – “Thank you for doing what you do for our family.”

That was such an eye-opening experience for both of us. It’s hard to see what impact toxins are having on your health, until you begin to get rid of them. This was years go, when we first started switching things out and it had only been a couple months of using the new detergent.
