5 Ways to Make Your Home a Calming Space

We all wish our homes had a little bit more peace and tranquility in them, don’t we? Especially with young children it can feel like chaos reigns all the time and your brain feels tapped out 24/7.

Nothing will ever be a perfect world but there are a few ways I’ve found that have given us a little bit more zen.

  1. Reduce the clutter – visual clutter creates mental clutter. It’s a simple fix that can drastically increase the calming feeling in your home – even if the place is a mess because, let’s be honest, you live there!
  2. Have a morning routine with a plan for the day – carve out 5 minutes to plan your focus for the day. I love using the 5 Second Journal from Mel Robbins for this. It works!
  3. Reading instead of screens – don’t look at your phone until your morning routine is done. In the evening, read instead of scrolling. Your brain will feel less overwhelmed and chaotic and your mood will shift! Pick up a book on personal development or a topic you’ve wanted to learn about.
  4. Let light + fresh air in – first thing, open all of the blinds and let that natural light in! Whenever you can, open the windows to allow in fresh air. The soothing sounds of nature and life outside can help your whole family feel connected and grounded.
  5. Have plants + take care of them as a family – surrounding yourself with life and greenery has been shown to reduce stress levels significantly. Bonus if the plants also feed or provide medicinal benefits. Having this be a family ritual, especially with young children.

My absolute favourite way to keep the chill factor up in our home when everyone’s getting a little squirrely is to pop this in the diffuser. I actually have it pre-made in an empty bottle because we use it so much. It’s part of our family’s “Diffuser Bar”.

The Zen Zone Diffuser Recipe

2 drops of Peace & Calming
2 drops of Jade Lemon
3 drop of Northern Lights Black Spruce

So in all honesty? I often wish there was a little less dishes to do and a few less shoes jumbled up in our entryway. I don’t know why those dirty clothes can’t seem to make it to the laundry bin and I wouldn’t mind if it was a wee bit quieter.

But I guess we live here.

In our noisy, slightly crazy – nevertheless peaceful – home.
